ACT TWO
FADE IN
INT: DINER - DAY
Monica pours a cup of coffee as she yawns. She takes a quick sip,
repulsed by the taste.
- LUKE (OS)
- Lorelai really HAS gotten to you.
Monica spins around to face him and the whole diner goes silent.
Luke looks around.
- LUKE
- (to everyone)
- Since when does this town have a fascination with me?
- MONICA
- Since never. They're only interested in you now that I've arrived.
You're Freddie Junior to my SMG.
- LUKE
- Are you calling me an imbecile?
- MONICA
- Directly? No. You fired me. That puts you in the same league as Mr.
Mimbo himself.
There's a collective GASP.
- LUKE
- Wasn't there GAY rumors going around about him too?
- MONICA
- For the last time, I AM NOT--
Monica's looks at the customers and is suddenly distracted. Luke and
his customers follow her gaze and turn around to see Lorelai's jeep
stopped at the light outside. A crowd surrounds the jeep.
- LUKE
- What the hell is going on out there? He looks at the preoccupied Monica
and everyone else quickly exits to join the crowd outside.
CUT TO:
EXT/INT: JEEP - CONTINUOUS
Lorelai beeps her horn in frustration at the crowd. MISS PATTY taps
on the plastic window and over all the voices:
- MISS PATTY
- Is it true darling? Are you really?
- LORELAI
- Am I what?
Kirk forces a way to get behind Miss Patty.
- KIRK
- Andrew says you're knocking boots with Monica.
Monica forces her way behind Kirk and slaps him over the head.
- KIRK
- Ow. What was that for?
Monica ignores him and looks at Lorelai -- who looks away.
- MISS PATTY
- (to Monica)
- We just want an answer.
- MONICA
- I'll give you an answer as soon as Lorelai and I discuss it.
- LORELAI
- Wait, Miss Patty, there's nothing to discuss. Monica's just joking!
Lorelai LAUGHS.
- MONICA
- (to Miss Patty)
- Let me get in the jeep and I'll give you an answer.
- LORELAI
- (to Monica)
- What are you talking about? There is NO answer.
Miss Patty moves and Monica eventually gets the driver's door open.
- MONICA
- (to Lorelai)
- Scoot over.
- LORELAI
- Why the hell didn't you just go straight for the passenger seat?
- MONICA
- Where's the fun in that? Besides, you know what I want to do.
Lorelai goes pale. Everyone goes quiet. Monica glances around and
GULPS.
- MONICA
- I mean, I don't want to do that. I wanna--
- MISS PATTY
- --you want to do what, dear?
- ANDREW
- Please climb over Lorelai as slowly as possible with the most bodily
contact.
- KIRK
- Yes, please do.
Monica turns and hits Kirk over the head again.
- KIRK
- Hey! Andrew said it.
- MONICA
- You're right. Start running Andrew.
Andrew LAUGHS. Monica holds up her pencil and he abruptly stops
laughing, backing out of the crowd and running for his life. Monica
turns around to see a baffled Lorelai.
- MONICA
- (to Lorelai)
- I'll tell you later. Just move over.
- LORELAI
- What are you doing?
- MONICA
- Trust me, okay?
Lorelai looks at Monica, not knowing if she can. Monica makes a move
and gets into the jeep, leaving Lorelai no choice but to quickly shift
over to avoid her. Monica pulls the door shut behind her and locks it
for good measure.
INSIDE
- LORELAI
- (whispering)
- Look, if you think that affirming the rumors are going to make them go
away...
Monica grabs the gear stick and struggles to get it into first.
- KIRK
- Hey, they're trying to get away.
- LORELAI
- (to Monica)
- Ease it in.
Monica tries but fails. Lorelai grows increasingly annoyed and the
pain doesn't help.
- MISS PATTY
- Monica, I thought you were going to give us an answer.
- MONICA
- (still trying to shift gears)
- Right, a little trick of mine I like to call leaving in a hurry, which
is clearly not happening today.
- LORELAI
- Oh for crying out loud, will you move your hand?
Monica throws her hands up in defeat and Lorelai tries the gear
stick. She can't get it into first either. As she struggles:
- MONICA
- (to Lorelai)
- See, it's not just me.
- KIRK
- I think it is. The jeep was perfectly fine a minute ago. That is, until
you decided to push the gear stick into the next century.
- MISS PATTY
- Kirk does have a point.
- MONICA
- (angrily)
- Fine, it's all my fault. All of it. I'm to blame for Kirk's pathetic
life, I'm to blame for Miss Patty going for the Liz Taylor marriage
record, I'm to blame for why Luke is unhappily single, I'm to blame for
Rory not talking to Lorelai--
- KIRK
- --well, having an affair with Lorelai isn't exactly friendship building
material.
- MONICA
- I'm NOT sleeping with Lorelai! She'll back me up.
Monica spins around and expects an answer from Lorelai who
frantically avoids the conversation as she continues her assault on the
gears.
Monica forgets the conversation and takes the gear stick over
Lorelai's hand. Together, relieved, they get it into gear.
The relief disappears as they realize they're practically holding
hands and they shoot them away from each other in an instant.
Monica gathers her senses and takes the steering wheel, jumping the
jeep forward.
OUTSIDE
- KIRK
- Everyone, stand united. They wont get away if--
Everyone moves out of the way and the jeep floors it down the
street. Miss Patty steps toward Kirk and hits him over the head. Pan
around to Luke in the doorway, looking very annoyed.
- LUKE
- Hey! Get back to work!
The crowd turns to him in confusion.
- LUKE
- I might've fired her, but nobody makes an omelette like Monica!
He steps back inside and slams the door.
CUT TO:
INT: JEEP - MINUTES LATER
Monica drives. Lorelai stares out the window. It's tense.
- MONICA
- Luke said Rory left early this morning.
Lorelai's silent.
- MONICA
- Hello? Earth to Lorelai!
- LORELAI
- I heard you. I'm just trying to get used to your death driving, with my
screwed up neck and all.
Monica looks at her for a long time, trying to read her.
- LORELAI
- Would you mind keeping your eyes on the road? I'd rather not die today.
Actually, maybe you should speed up. Put me out of my misery.
Monica quickly slows down.
- LORELAI
- I was quite happy leaving work to go sort out the mess with my
daughter, but then you had to go "Thelma and Louise" it.
- MONICA
- Don't take it out on me, okay?
- LORELAI
- The whole town is thinking...
- MONICA
- They think I'm one too. Thanks a lot.
- LORELAI
- You're blaming me for this?!
- MONICA
- You're the one who thought I needed a babysitter on Wednesday night.
- LORELAI
- Because you were drunk!
- MONICA
- So, I was drunk now!
- LORELAI
- Whatever. This stunt of yours is only going to fuel the speculation.
- MONICA
- Get over it already!
- LORELAI
- Get out of my life and I will!
- MONICA
- Fine!
Monica continues to drive on. Lorelai looks out her window. A long
moment passes before:
- LORELAI
- You do know how to get to Chilton, don't you?
- MONICA
- We're not going to Chilton.
- LORELAI
- What?
- MONICA
- You're acting like Carrie at the prom and I'm not inflicting that on
your daughter. Isn't she almost in her last class anyway?
- LORELAI
- Stop.
- MONICA
- No.
- LORELAI
- (loudly)
- Stop! This is my jeep. Where the hell are you taking me?
- MONICA
- I have no idea. Just SHUT UP and enjoy the view.
- LORELAI
- (firmly)
- Let me out, Monica.
- MONICA
- Listen for a minute okay? I know it sounded like I didn't believe you
last night when you said it wasn't true...
Lorelai fiddles in her seat and massages her neck.
- LORELAI
- It's not.
- MONICA
- I know. Maybe it was a mistake.
- LORELAI
- (angrily)
- You think that I should've been gay?!
- MONICA
- No! God no. It was a mistake for me to come here. Maybe I should go
back to Washington.
Lorelai's caught off guard. The realization of Monica leaving hits
her hard.
- LORELAI
- What?
- MONICA
- I'm causing too much trouble and that wasn't my intention--
- LORELAI
- (quietly)
- --we've only just gotten to know each other.
- MONICA
- The town thinks we're an item. Isn't that a good enough reason to
leave?
- LORELAI
- Well, it's obvious we're not by the way we fight.
Monica CHUCKLES and a comfortable silence develops.
- LORELAI
- Promise me you won't leave.
Monica regards Lorelai, then holds out her pinkie finger. Lorelai's
look is grave and Monica drops her hand.
- MONICA
- Cross my heart, hope to die.
- LORELAI
- Monica, I'm being serious--
- MONICA
- --I promise.
Lorelai smiles, then Monica mirrors her.
- LORELAI
- Can I state for the record your attention while driving completely
sucks?
- MONICA
- Fair comment.
CUT TO:
INT: INN, FOYER - DAY
Sookie walks out the kitchen door and spots Michel. She goes toward
him but stops in thought. She walks a little further to him but stops
again. Michel notices her indecision and a grin appears. Sookie FINALLY
reaches him.
- SOOKIE
- This meeting you're holding, when's it on?
Michels smile widens.
- MICHEL
- Well, my my my. You've changed your tune.
- SOOKIE
- I don't want to hear it Michel. Just give me a time and a place and
I'll see if I want to go when the time comes.
Michel cant help beaming with excitement.
- MICHEL
- I'm thinking of holding the meeting Sunday night. That's all I've got
so far.
- SOOKIE
- Ok. Stop that smiling. You're reminding me of that clown that killed
small kids.
This doesn't deter Michel from his grinning. Sookie rushes off.
CUT TO:
EXT/INT: GILMORE HOUSE - DAY
The jeep stops at the house. Monica gets out quickly while Lorelai
eases herself out. BABETTE appears.
- BABETTE
- Hello you two. Have fun?
Monica raises an eyebrow. Lorelai smiles politely at Babette, who
picks up on her weary form.
- BABETTE
- Are you okay sugar?
- LORELAI
- Yeah.
- BABETTE
- You're worried about the town meeting, aren't you?
- LORELAI
- No, I'm not. Really.
- MONICA
- Lorelai's fine. She just needs to lie down.
- BABETTE
- It's understandable. If the town assumed I was THAT way I'd be a bit
out of whack as well--although I haven't been stalling in the
relationship states with the local diner guy and I don't have the figure
to be a--
- (air quotes)
- --new age feminist.
- (to Monica)
- Not that there's anything wrong with that.
- MONICA
- What are you--
- LORELAI
- (to Babette)
- --I'm sorry Babette but I have to lie down before I fall down. Right
Monica?
Monica pulls her glare from Babette and glances at Lorelai. Her face
softens and she nods.
- MONICA
- (to Babette)
- Right. I'll make sure this cripple gets inside. Thanks for your
concern.
Lorelai smiles to assure Babette.
- BABETTE
- If you two need anything...
- LORELAI
- I'll be sure to ask.
Babette turns back toward her house and Monica and Lorelai walk up
the steps to the front door.
- MONICA
- She was insinuating that we--
- LORELAI
- --don't mention it.
- MONICA
- Right.
Lorelai finds her keys and unlocks the front door.
INSIDE
Lorelai and Monica walk in.
- LORELAI
- I'd give you the grand tour.
- MONICA
- No need. I'll check it out later when I'm lifting your jewellery.
- (beat)
- I'm sorry about before with the town.
Lorelai heads for the couch and Monica follows her, looking around
and admiring the place.
- LORELAI
- You just threw me, that's all. I think we work better when no one's
around.
- MONICA
- I don't feel like killing you right now like I did before so I guess
you're right.
Lorelai's amused and awkwardly adjusts her sweater. Monica realizes
what she wants. Without a word she steps to Lorelai and grabs the bottom
of the sweater, working it up slowly. Her eyes are concentrated on the
task while Lorelai watches her.
Monica looks up and holds Lorelai's gaze for a moment, about to say
something when Lorelai lifts her arms to Monica's elbows and holds them
out past her.
Monica stays silent, leaning into Lorelai to wrap her hands around
her and grab the back of the sweater. She manages to get it over
Lorelai's head with minimal effort and she steps back to pull it off.
Lorelai grins to herself before carefully laying on the couch,
trying to get comfortable.
- LORELAI
- You should get back to work.
- MONICA
- It doesn't matter. Luke fired me.
- LORELAI
- What? What for?
- MONICA
- Because he can. Hey, do you mind if...
Monica points her hand down at the coffee table.
- LORELAI
- Go ahead.
Monica sits down on the edge of it, taking Lorelai's foot in her
hands. She pulls off her shoe and then the other one - Lorelai quietly
admires her, a little surprised when Monica moves to her and straightens
the pillow beneath her head. Her hands remain there beside Lorelai's
face.
- MONICA
- Is that okay?
- LORELAI
- Yep. Honestly I think you should go and get your job back.
- MONICA
- It can wait. As much as you've been a cow today, you're well-being is
still more important than me annoying Luke. Now, what do you need within
arm's length of you?
- LORELAI
- You're within arm's length.
Monica notices her hands. She pulls them away with an embarrassed
smile.
- LORELAI
- A coffee.
- MONICA
- Should've guessed, but you're drinking it out of a straw, got me?
Monica stands.
- LORELAI
- (saluting)
- Aye aye Captain.
- MONICA
- Very funny.
- LORELAI
- You'll see what I mean.
Monica gives a baffled look before walking into the kitchen.
CUT TO:
INT: DINER - DAY
Luke stands at the counter, cleaning in the same circular motion
over the same area. CAESAR emerges from the kitchen and comes up behind
him. Luke is unaware he's there.
- CAESAR
- You like her.
Luke jumps a foot and spins around.
- LUKE
- Jesus! I wouldn't make a habit of doing that because one day I'll have
something sharp in my hand and it wont be a good moment for you.
Caesar smirks.
- CAESAR
- It's clear that your mind is elsewhere, where the person that is not
presently here is.
- LUKE
- What?
- CAESAR
- You wanted to get rid of her - and it didn't work. Now that she's gone,
you want her back here.
- LUKE
- I'm glad she's gone. She finally got out of my hair.
- CAESAR
- What's left of it.
- LUKE
- Do you wanna be fired as well?
- CAESAR
- You couldn't fire a pile of leaves if you had a lit match.
- LUKE
- Fine, I suck at it, but you're missing the point.
- CAESAR
- And that is?
- LUKE
- I have no idea who she is. She could very well be an alcoholic. She
could be running from the law. She could have dumped her husbands body
somewhere. She may have double-crossed the Mafia. She may be an
alcoholic who, in a drunken binge, killed her Mafia husband and dumped
his body in New Jersey and now they're out to get her. She may--
- CAESAR
- --like you too.
- LUKE
- I hardly know that she LIKES guys. I'm starting to think there's truth
to what's going on.
- CAESAR
- You believe that rubbish?
- LUKE
- I really don't know. I've seen too much of Miss Patty today to even
think properly without the 'oh my god, did you hear that' and 'are you
sure she's a lesbian' rattling through my head - and I'm not exactly in
Monica's good books anyway.
- CAESAR
- She's still in town. She hung around to annoy you today. It's clear
this job means something to her.
- LUKE
- Yeah, the JOB.
- CAESAR
- The job with YOU. Just ask her out already.
Caesar disappears. Luke solemnly returns to his cleaning.
