ACT THREE
EXT/INT: GILMORE MANSION - DAY
Rory walks up to the door, taking a minute to compose herself and
practice a decent smile. She rings the DOORBELL and moments later the
door opens to reveal EMILY.
- EMILY
- Rory, what a lovely surprise!
- RORY
- Hi Grandma, I hope I'm not intruding.
- EMILY
- No, no, no. Come in.
Emily steps aside and Rory walks in.
INSIDE
Emily closes the door, all smiles.
- EMILY
- Can I take your coat?
- RORY
- Actually I think I'll keep it on. I'm a little cold.
- EMILY
- You're cold?
- RORY
- I'm okay.
Emily ushers Rory into the lounge room where they sit down.
- EMILY
- You've come straight from school then?
- RORY
- I had a lot of studying to get through. It's a little easier to do it
immediately after school. Brain function's still high.
- EMILY
- How are your classes going?
- RORY
- They're all good and interesting. I thought I was going to be madly
overloaded by now because of finals but I'm not.
- EMILY
- It's certainly an exciting and busy time. I remember two weeks before
my finals, I broke out in hives because I was so nervous and I was
covered from head to foot in them. The embarrassment of being seen like
that forced me inside, I studied and got a better grade than I had ever
dreamed of.
- RORY
- I think I might try that.
Emily and Rory both LAUGH.
- EMILY
- Should I expect your mother to be late tonight?
Rory doesn't answer.
- EMILY
- Is everything okay?
- RORY
- Ah, yes it is.
- EMILY
- Are you sure?
- RORY
- I'm sure.
A cell phone RINGS. Rory looks apologetically at Emily.
- EMILY
- It's okay. You answer it and I'll go make you some coffee to warm you
up.
- RORY
- Thanks.
Rory pulls her phone from her pocket and see who it is. Her face
drops and she cancels the call.
CUT TO:
INT: GILMORE HOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Monica looks worriedly at the phone. Behind her Lorelai sleeps on,
unaware of Monica, the clutter of belongings around them and the tv
playing from its new position behind the couch. Monica looks at Lorelai
and dials again.
CUT TO:
INT: GILMORE MANSION - CONTINUOUS
Rory's cell RINGS again and she glares at it before canceling. Emily
steps back into the room.
- EMILY
- Did your phone just ring twice?
- RORY
- Uh, no.
Emily looks at Rory in concern.
- EMILY
- It most certainly did. What's going on dear?
Rory slides back into the chair. Emily sits down next to her.
- EMILY
- What's Lorelai done now?
- RORY
- Grandma, it's nothing.
Rory grins but it doesn't convince Emily.
- EMILY
- Rory, tell me now. I'm not kidding.
Rory knows she's not getting out of this. Her eyes drop to the
floor.
CUT TO:
INT: GILMORE HOUSE - MINUTES LATER.
Monica paces the room, tapping the phone aerial against her lips in
thought. Frustrated, she switches the tv off and walks into the kitchen.
- MONICA
- Where are you Rory? Monica dials again.
INTERCUT:
INT: LUKE'S DINER - CONTINUOUS
The phone RINGS as Luke pours a cup of coffee for a customer. He
grabs the phone and answers.
- LUKE
- Luke's Diner.
He gets WHISPERING.
- MONICA
- Luke, did you see Rory get off the bus?
- LUKE
- Where did you get to?
- MONICA
- I took Lorelai home.
- (beat)
- No, I didn't TAKE Lorelai home. I took her home. There's a difference.
Luke rolls his eyes.
- LUKE
- Nice stunt you pulled this afternoon. Do you know how many customers we
had after you decided to hi-tail it outta here?
- MONICA
- I thought I was fired.
- LUKE
- Why are you whispering?
- MONICA
- Lorelai's asleep, and before you even think it, she didn't fall asleep
after I had my way with her. Do you know if Rory's bus is back?
- LUKE
- You're the one doing the assuming.
- MONICA
- (annoyed)
- Have you seen her?
Luke wants to talk to her, but he holds back.
- LUKE
- Look Monica, I've got customers to get to.
- MONICA
- (angrily)
- Fine. Get to your PRECIOUS customers Luke. I haven't got the faintest
idea where Rory is, but don't worry about her. I'm sure Kirk and Co. are
a lot more important to you.
Monica hangs up in frustration and walks back into the lounge. She's
about to wake up Lorelai when the phone RINGS. Monica manages to answer
it without waking Lorelai. She moves back into the hall.
- MONICA
- (worriedly)
- Rory? Where the hell are you?
Luke hears Monica' s concern.
- LUKE
- Hey, it's Friday night. She may have gone straight to her grand parents
for dinner.
- MONICA
- You think that's where she is?
- LUKE
- I'd bet after last nights troubles that's where she'll be.
- MONICA
- (quickly)
- She won't answer my calls. I'm not overreacting, am I? She gets the
3:30 bus everyday. Well, that's what she told me. Am I overreacting?
- LUKE
- A little. Just calm down. Her and Lorelai both have dinner there every
Friday night. Lorelai didn't tell you?
- MONICA
- No, although why would she? Any chance you know where they live?
- LUKE
- Park West in Hartford, no idea what number.
- MONICA
- Good enough.
- LUKE
- It's a long street.
- MONICA
- No biggie.
- LUKE
- You need to check up on her that badly?
- MONICA
- Lorelai doesn't need to worry about whether Rory's coming home. She's
stressed out already - and you don't have to be a genius to work out
why. Right Freddie?
Luke doesn't find it funny.
- LUKE
- Don't drive too fast.
Monica smiles.
- MONICA
- Oh my God. You care.
- LUKE
- Don't come in tomorrow.
Monica loses the smile.
- MONICA
- Great. Say something nice then go and screw it up with that.
- LUKE
- It's the weekend, and you need time to actually have a LIFE.
- MONICA
- Absence WILL make your heart grow fonder, you do realize that?
Luke says nothing.
- MONICA
- That's your plan.
- LUKE
- There's no plan.
- MONICA
- You'll calm down while I'm not there.
- LUKE
- I won't calm down.
- MONICA
- You know you will.
- LUKE
- I won't.
- MONICA
- Give it up Luke. Your acting isn't worthy of Mariah Carey.
Luke's insulted, but he lets it go.
- LUKE
- I was never any good at poker, you know.
- MONICA
- I believe that.
- LUKE
- You should go.
- MONICA
- I should. Thanks.
- LUKE
- Leave Lorelai a note, okay? We've already got one crazy woman after
Rory Gilmore, we don't need two.
- MONICA
- Okay. Goodnight Luke.
- LUKE
- Goodnight Monica.
Monica hangs up and walks back to Lorelai. From the coffee table she
pulls a throwover out and carefully covers Lorelai.
Monica finds a pen and some paper from the organized mess around
her. A minute goes by as she writes, finding humor in what she's
writing. She finishes, leaving it on Lorelai. As she leaves she takes
Lorelai's sweater with her.
CUT TO:
INT: GILMORE MANSION - NIGHT
Rory and Emily sit and eat dinner. It's quiet for the most part.
Emily puts her fork down and looks Rory's way.
- EMILY
- I don't understand this sudden friendship you have with this Monica
woman.
- RORY
- She's not a criminal Grandma. Like I said before, I know enough about
her to know she's not a bad person.
- EMILY
- How can you possibly know that? She tells you she's from Washington and
that's a good enough amount of information for you?
- RORY
- Yes it is.
- EMILY
- Well, young lady, it looks as if you were proved wrong with the stunt
she pulled with your mother. She's obviously got you upset and yet you
sit here and defend her like she's the new Mother Teresa, while you
criticize your mother for simply trying to avoid the situation you're
both in now.
Rory doesn't have a comeback. She knows Emily's right.
- EMILY
- I've got a good mind to call your mother and chastize her for both
associating with this Monica and allowing you to. What exactly do you
and Monica have in common?
- RORY
- We both share the opinion that I should be able to talk to whomever I
like.
- EMILY
- Please don't get sarcastic with me young lady. I get enough of it from
your mother - no, let me rephrase that. I'd be getting enough from that
if she bothered to turn up to dinner tonight.
Rory sulks and says nothing.
- EMILY
- Your mother has that down to a tea too, so please stop it.
Rory continues to sulk. Emily's unimpressed.
CUT TO:
INT/EXT: JEEP - NIGHT
Monica's at the wheel, driving very slowly. She peers out the
passenger window, totally lost.
- MONICA
- Right, this isn't getting you anywhere. It's time for you to get out
and knock on some poor old buzzards door. Of course, there's the
unfortunate diner smell to take care of.
She pulls the car to the curb and parks, one hand already
unbuttoning Luke's shirt. She struggles to get it off and bangs her
elbow against the door, unaware of the police car pulling up alongside
her.
- MONICA
- Ow. God damn door. Why couldn't Luke wear normal clothes for once?
Two COPS step out and head for Monica's door. Cop 1 shines a torch
at Monica, who shuffles around in half- undressed mode. She frees a hand
and winds her window down.
- MONICA
- Is there a problem officer?
- COP 1
- Ma'am, you're half undressed and you've been prowling up the street for
the last hour. Mrs. Lazeby was quite concerned.
- COP 2
- Mrs. Lazeby is concerned about the wind blowing.
Cop 2 LAUGHS sharply.
- COP 1
- License and registration papers please.
Monica manages to hit her head with her hand in the tangle that is
the shirt.
- COP 1
- I assume that's a no.
- MONICA
- Yes, that's a no.
- COP 1
- The first rule of driving is carry your license at all--
- COP 2
- --times, blah, blah, blah. Come on man, so it's a half naked lady in
Hartford. Drive ten minutes down the road and there's a lot more of them
to arrest.
He LAUGHS at his own joke.
- COP 1
- (to Monica)
- I'm afraid I'm gonna have to book you for this ma'am. It's clear you
were simply changing. Mrs Lazeby's mind tends to go into overdrive.
- MONICA
- Right, blowing wind and all. I was just creeping up the street because
I'm trying to find a particular house and--
- COP 1
- --ma'am, Mrs Lazeby informed us you've driven past her place at least
twenty times. Is this true?
- MONICA
- I'm pretty dedicated to the cause, part of being with the FBI.
Cop 2 LAUGHS again. Monica isn't happy about that.
- COP 1
- Ma'am, I don't appreciate the assumption that I'm going to let you go
simply because you say you have a badge.
- MONICA
- I wasn't assuming that officer--
- COP 1
- --ma'am, step out of the car please.
Monica struggles to get the flannel back on properly. The cops
impatiently wait. She FINALLY gets it on and gets out.
- MONICA
- You can see why chicks don't wear flannel.
- COP 2
- Straight girls just don't have the knack of it.
- MONICA
- Straight girls?
- COP 1
- You know?
- MONICA
- No, I don't know.
The cops look at each other.
- COP 2
- We certainly didn't mean anything by it.
- MONICA
- I'm not--
- COP 1
- --don't worry about it. Let's get back to you not having a license.
You'll have to accompany us down to the station so we can verify your
details.
- MONICA
- Is that necessary?
- COP 1
- Yes. Please lock you car Ma'am. Monica does what she's told, clearly
not liking it.
Cop 1 opens the back door and Monica grudgingly gets in.
CUT TO:
INT/EXT: POLICE CAR - CONTINUOUS
Monica sulks in the backseat.
- MONICA
- (quietly)
- NEVER wearing flannel again.
The cops get in.
- MONICA
- Look, can I just ask before I get done for murder, do you know where
the Gilmore's live?
Both cops whirl around.
- COP 1
- (cheerily)
- Why didn't you just say you knew the Gilmore's?
- MONICA
- I didn't realize they were above the law.
- COP 1
- Wow, I went to high school with their daughter. Man, she was a catch.
- COP 2
- Small world, huh?
- COP 1
- Is it ever?
- (to Monica)
- How do you know them?
- MONICA
- I'm a friend of Lorelai's.
- COP 1
- Really? Wow. How is she?
- MONICA
- She's, ah, colorful and full of energy.
- COP 1
- Do you think you could pass my number on to her?
Monica smiles and plays along.
- MONICA
- I don't know -- I am getting booked so it wont be tonight.
- COP 1
- Oh, forget about that.
- COP 2
- That was before we knew you knew the Gilmore's.
- MONICA
- Right. Ok then, any chance you could point me in the direction of their
house?
- COP 1
- I can do better than that.
OUTSIDE CAR
The police car reverses back to the very next house.
INSIDE CAR
- MONICA
- Damn, I was close.
- COP 2
- Hey, did you want to go on a double date or something? I have been
known to swing girls back.
Monica finds a smile and continues faking her interest.
- MONICA
- Why not? What's your numbers studs?
The cops scramble around for a pen and something to write on.
CUT TO:
INT: GILMORE MANSION - NIGHT
Emily and Rory sit in silence as a maid clears their plates. Rory is
beyond relief when the door bell RINGS.
- RORY
- Yeah! A visitor.
She jumps out of her seat and heads for the door. Emily follows.
- EMILY
- I swear, if that's your mother...
- RORY
- It won't be.
Rory opens it to reveal Monica, flanked by both cops.
- RORY
- Monica. Oh my God.
Emily looks mortified that this flannel-wearing criminal is Monica.
Monica finds a smile.
- MONICA
- (to Rory)
- I knew I should've turned up with those two playboy bunnies.
Both cops are delighted at the reference. Rory doesn't smile and
Monica's disappears.
